Common Causes of Water Damage in Homes

Updated: Jul 7

Water, a source of life, can also become a silent intruder wreaking havoc within the walls of our homes. Understanding the common causes of water damage is the first step in safeguarding your sanctuary. Join us as we unveil the culprits behind this potential threat and explore ways to fortify your home against water's subtle onslaught. I have personally had a pipe burst in my house and witnessed firsthand the damage that it can cause. I hope the following information can help at least one person avoid some of the same issues that my family and I faced with that burst pipe.

6 Common Causes of Water Damage

1: Leaky Roofs and Damaged Gutters

Rain, while soothing, can turn detrimental when roofs and gutters are compromised. The impact of leaky roofs and damaged gutters, from attic seepage to foundation erosion, can be extensive. Inspect your roof and gutters regularly to ensure that they are in working order. Also make sure to clean out your gutters regularly to ensure proper drainage.

2: Burst Pipes and Plumbing Issues

Behind the scenes, pipes quietly deliver the lifeblood of your home. Discover how burst pipes and plumbing mishaps can turn this convenience into a source of water damage, affecting various areas of your property. From my personal experience with this issue one of the main things people need to know about is where the shut off valve for the water main is for their house. Many times, the first thing to do when a burst pipe or water issue occurs is to shut off the water main. After that you can have a plumber come to fix the pipe before turning the water back on. By quickly shutting off the water you can limit the amount of damage that occurs. If you need help locating your water shut off valve shoot us a call or email and we can help.

3: Appliance Failures

Our modern conveniences, from washing machines to dishwashers, can also become sources of water damage. Dive into the potential risks of appliance failures and learn preventive measures to safeguard your home. One of the great ways to limit your issues with appliances is to have a licensed plumber install them and have the water connections inspected yearly. One of the most common issues I see are dishwasher and fridge water lines leaking which can cause 10s of thousands in damage.

4: Basement Flooding

The lowest point of your home is often the most vulnerable. Explore the causes of basement flooding, from heavy rain to poor drainage, and learn how to fortify this critical space. Each year be sure to inspect that your landscaping and all areas around your home are slanted away from the foundation. If possible, install drain tile and a sump pump to help with issues of water intrusion. If that is out of your budget and you have an unfinished basement another option that can help keep your basement dry is painting the concrete or blocks with paint that is meant to keep water from penetrating the wall.

5: Clogged Drains and Sewer Backups

Blocked drains and sewer backups can turn routine water disposal into a nightmare. Uncover the common causes behind these issues and gain insights into prevention and mitigation strategies. One of the main things that causes sewer backups is flushing the “flushable” wipes, please do not flush these wipes. For drains ensure to keep hair out of them to help prevent clogging them up.

6: HVAC System Concerns

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, while maintaining comfort, can harbor potential water damage risks. Delve into the impact of HVAC system concerns and how to ensure their seamless operation. Many of these systems have a pump that will get rid of condensation as it builds up. In my own house I have had the hose that is used to drain the pump crack and it pumped water all over the place. Have your systems inspected and maintained by a professional.
