Navigating the Mess: Steps to Take When Facing a Sewage Cleanup Situation

Updated: Jul 7

Facing a sewage cleanup situation can be overwhelming and hazardous. I had just completed my IICRC training for sewage cleanup and was ready to test everything I had learned in the classroom. I got a call a few days later from a customer who had a sewage backup in their home. They were nervous and wanted to make sure they got everything clean so that their two little girls would be safe in their home. I was able to walk them through the process of working with their insurance provider and get everything cleaned up to industry standard. They mentioned to me how overwhelming the initial loss had been and how having the knowledge that I shared with them put their family at ease. So, I wrote this guide to help other homeowners.

Steps for Safe and Effective Sewage Cleanup

1. Prioritize Safety:

Safety is paramount when dealing with sewage cleanup. Wear protective gear, including gloves, goggles, water resistant suits and boots, to minimize exposure to harmful bacteria and pathogens. Turn off electrical power to affected areas and avoid contact with contaminated water.

2. Assess the Extent of Damage:

Thoroughly assess the extent of sewage damage to your property. Identify affected areas, including walls, floors, and belongings, and evaluate the severity of contamination. Take note of any structural damage or compromised materials that may require professional intervention. Make sure to document the damage with lots of pictures and videos, this will help with the insurance coverage.

3. Containment and Isolation:

Contain the sewage spill to prevent further spread of contamination. Use barriers or plastic sheeting to isolate affected areas and block off access to prevent cross-contamination. Close doors and windows in adjacent rooms to minimize the spread of odors and airborne particles.

4. Remove Standing Water:

Promptly remove standing sewage water using pumps, wet vacuums, or buckets. Dispose of contaminated water properly and avoid draining it into storm drains or septic systems. Thoroughly clean and disinfect the affected surfaces to minimize health risks.

5. Disposal of Contaminated Materials:

Dispose of contaminated materials, such as carpeting, upholstery, drywall and porous materials, that cannot be salvaged. Follow local regulations and guidelines for proper disposal of hazardous waste. Seal contaminated materials in plastic bags before disposal to prevent further contamination.

6. Cleaning and Disinfection:

Thoroughly clean and disinfect all affected surfaces using EPA-approved disinfectants. Scrub walls, floors, and hard surfaces with hot water and detergent to remove sewage residue and bacteria. Pay special attention to areas with visible contamination and sanitize thoroughly.

7. Professional Restoration Services:

Seek professional restoration services for thorough cleanup and restoration of your property. Certified technicians have the expertise, equipment, and resources to safely and effectively address sewage cleanup situations, ensuring a swift and thorough restoration process.
